Vote for MAD - Make India Proud

November 2nd, 2008

I want to introduce you to the most wonderful NGO in the world, which was working right under our noses and still we failed to see how they were Making a Difference

Make A Difference (M.A.D) is a youth volunteer network that currently functions in the three cities of Cochin, Pune and Chennai… 312 volunteers teach more than 1200 underprivileged kids English and computer skills in these three cities to enable them to have better career prospects…

These children live in street shelters and orphanages. Without proper guidance, their lives will go astray. MAD makes sure that they have the proper life skills to make it in life. Then MAD tries to get them placed at jobs where they can live their potential…

MAD was recently picked as one of fifteen finalists for the international Youth Social Entrepreneur Awards which is a prestigious award bestowed by the Ashoka group. MAD became the only Indian entry in this competition by in spite of 521 nominations from 60 odd countries. The final winner will be picked by online voting.

Let’s try and bring pride to our country by spreading word about the achievements of our countrymen. To stand up and be recognized in such a multi-faced international crowd is an achievement in itself.

Spread the word in every way we know, post in orkut, mail friends and get them to vote.

An Honest Report on Campus Bloggers Meet

October 23rd, 2008

Is blogging an easy task? Is it for everybody? What are the basics that one needs to know before he sets foot in this mysterious world of words, programming and search engine optimization??

Well, the answers would be: yes, yes, and nothing that can’t be handled in one session by the campus blogging team.
A handful of blogger wannabes and beginner bloggers assembled at the Mind Parlor, Ponnurunni, on 19th October, for precisely this purpose. Though, initially, there was a fear that perhaps the experts would outnumber the students two to one, a couple of late arrivals set an even field for the event.

It all started out with Kenney’s description of the campus blogging initiative. The opportunities and the benefits of having such a programme were discussed at length. There were also sporadic discussions of the possible interpretations of the campus blogging logo. The three sites which have already embraced the revolution are progressing along nicely, Sree Buddha College’s ‘vosree.com’ deserving special mention.

Seeing vosree.com, one gets the distinct feeling of being within a campus. The motorcycle diaries, the lab stories, the pranks and the trivial comments all go a long way in setting the environment. All in all, probably a must have for every college. A campus outside a campus. Though, the advantage of this one being, you can never get suspended or dismissed, you will only get banned. 

Then it was Anand’s turn to take the floor and try to impress the newbies with WordPress talk. The blogging platform is one of the most popular, and has been catching on like wild fire since its launch. The most spectacular feature of WordPress probably lies in the amount of customization that it is capable of undergoing. Whatever the blogger’s needs maybe, there is a good chance that you he might find a plugin already there, all set to do the job for him. Given the features, the platform’s success and popularity are no real surprise.

Then it was time to look at the technology that drives the entire system. The servers that host the platform, and the people who take care of the servers. (Forgot the name. Sorry) took the assembled on a lightning tour of the nuances of the entire process, astonishing some, confusing many, and boring one. 

That finished off a day where a lot of people got to learn a lot of stuff, and some took the opportunity to show off with what knowledge they had of the blogging world. But, the true achievement of the day was not just that. The true achievement was the formation of a support group that has the potential of educating more in the future.

The effort is on already to outnumber the trainers by a substantial number for the next meeting, to ensure that they do not show off as much as they had the luxury of doing this time. Hope you will be there with us then as well. Counting on it. See ya!!
